HomeShare of Central Vermont (HSCVT) is an organization that provides matching services for homesharing and caregiving. HSCVT assists elders and persons with disabilities to live independently in their own homes by bringing them together with persons who seek affordable housing and/or caregiving opportunities. They provide a comprehensive screening and matching service.
In 2003 the City of Montpelier was awarded a $150,000 grant from the Vermont Community Development Program (VCDP) to assist the Central Vermont Council on Aging in their efforts to start a home share program in Central Vermont. In addition to the VCDP grant, the City contributed $5,000 a year to the program from its Revolving Loan Fund during the first 3 years of operation.
How
Does It Work?
Home Share of Central Vermont matches elderly or disabled persons who live alone in their homes with persons seeking affordable housing. Home seekers pay a modest rent or work 12-15 hours a week. Home providers benefit from having someone around to lend a hand and the companionship of a house mate. Under the direction of Betsy Reid the program facilitated 14 matches during the first two years of operation.
HomeShare makes yard work a breeze...
Cleaning up the lawn together is just one of the many ways that Anne Maule, left, and Peggy Bingham enjoy the benefits of sharing a home. Through Home Share of Central Vermont (HSCVT) Bingham opened her home to Maule, giving the young woman an inexpensive place to live so she can continue her education and also work fulltime. In return, Maule helps Bingham with her health needs and household chores. Perhaps best of all, they've become friends. HSCVT began in March 2003 with a grant from the Vermont Community Development Program and was administered by the City of Montpelier.
