Cross Vermont Trail
The Cross Vermont Trail is a project to build a multi-use, four season path across the width of Vermont; following the Winooski River valley and the Wells River valley. An 85-mile route is signed and designated across the state of Vermont. The trail connects 17 communities, their schools, and the natural areas between.
From its western end on the shores of Lake Champlain in Burlington, VT, the route roughly parallels the Winooski River through the towns of Burlington, South Burlington, Williston, Richmond, Bolton, Duxbury, Waterbury, Middlesex, Berlin and to its mid-point in Montpelier. Much of the western half of the CVT currently follows paved and dirt roads.
From Montpelier, VT to the trail's eastern terminus at the Connecticut River in Wells River, VT, the route follows portions of the alignment of the former Montpelier-Wells River Railroad. The Cross Vermont Trail Association (CVTA) is working with willing public and private landowners along the former Railroad Bed to move portions of the trail off road. Much of the CVTA's current trail projects are happening in Montpelier and East Montpelier.
