    Montpelier Public School System

    The Montpelier Public School System consists of Union Elementary School (grades K-4), Main Street Middle School (grades 5-8), and of Montpelier High School (grades 9-12).  Many opportunities are available for children, parents, and teens to become involved in the school programs, activities, and events.

    The Montpelier Recreation Department is located in the School District offices on Barre Street and oversees all of the athletic activities and facilities for the City schools.

    School Enrollment
    • School enrollment has continually declined since 1994, a trend that is expected to continue into the 2003-2004 school year.
    • In 1994, 1,338 students were enrolled in Montpelier schools; in 2001, the number was down to 1,207, a drop of 13 percent.
    • Total enrollment is expected to drop to 1,077 by the 2003-2004 school year.
    • High School enrollments increased between the 1997 and 2000 school years, but in 2001 it began to return to the 1994 enrollment level of 438 students. Projected enrollment in the 2003-2004 school year is 432 students.
    • Middle School enrollments declined by 25 percent between 1994 and 2001, from 419 to 313 students. Projected enrollment in the 2003-2004 school year is 244 students.
    • Elementary School enrollments declined by 11 percent between 1994 and 2001 from 464 to 413. Projected enrollment in the 2003-2004 school year is 395 students.

    Opportunities exist for adults and people of all ages to further their education in a particular field, learn specific skills, attend independent courses, or pursue general studies.  Despite its small size, Montpelier boasts of having the following five institutions of higher learning:

    Located on the Vermont College campus, the Community College of Vermont's Montpelier campus enrolls approximately 900 students annually. This institution largely serves non-traditional students and is part of a statewide system. Administrative and other services are housed at 89 Main Street, City Center.

    As the name suggests, the New England Culinary Institute specializes in education of the culinary arts. NECI enrolls approximately 400 students annually. In addition to the main campus, the school owns and operates the Chef's Table and the Main Street Bar & Grill restaurants and the La Brioche Bakery & Cafe in the downtown.

    Vermont College is associated with Union Institute and University and offers a wide variety of degree programs. The Vermont College campus comprises approximately 35 acres and is a growing institution expected to continue to grow over the coming years.

    Woodbury's programs are designed to foster the knowledge and technical competency adult learners need to successfully prepare for rewarding work, further education, and active community participation with internships that give students direct experience in law offices, courts, state agencies, and community organizations.

    A wide variety of workshops, lectures, and classes are offered throughout the year in Montpelier for almost every age and interest.
