1 Taylor Street: 
Redevelopment and Transit Center

1 Taylor Street is the site formerly known as the "Carr Lot” property. It is located on the east side of Taylor Street in the city of Montpelier at the confluence of the North Branch and Winooski Rivers. It is approximately one acre in size. It was purchased by the city of Montpelier in January 2014 and is currently leased by the State of Vermont for state employee parking. It is centrally located in the downtown business district and adjacent to the State's Capitol Complex. The city of Montpelier hopes to transform what was once a scrap yard and train depot into a state-of-the-art transportation and commercial center and public park. This project is funded through the Federal Highway Administration, the Federal Transit Administration and the City of Montpelier.

As part of this redevelopment project, the city is in the process of entering into a development agreement with Redstone to build the multimodal transit center and upper floor private development. Here you will find information on that process.

Community Participation Event Process

Gossens Bachman Architects is guiding Montpelier through a community participation process with the expected outcome of a community-driven site design and plan for the redevelopment of 1 Taylor Street.

“The Taylor Street project and property presents a unique opportunity for a public/private partnership on a critical downtown site with exciting possibilities,” said Gregg Gossens, lead architect on the project. “To successfully capture these opportunities, we have laid out a meaningful public participation process. The process will be as inclusive as possible and productively structured. Participation by all, reinforced and facilitated by the design team, will ensure truly civic effort that is visionary and engaging.”

The four events are meant to build on one another. The public is encouraged to attend each event.
