Mill Pond Park

Background
The Mill Pond Park is the most recent addition to the Montpelier Parks system.  Thanks to two weeks of help from an amazing Summer 2005 VT Youth Conservation Corps (VYCC) crew, a week of work from Summer 2005's International Volunteers for Peace and a number of community volunteers, we planted numerous trees, riverbank plants and native flowers (including blueberries), worked on removing invasive species, put in a pathway, a set of steps, and a place for launching boats. Why call it Mill Pond Park? We are told that the dam down river was put in to create water power for a mill, and the dam subsequently created a pond behind it. Hence the name, "Mill Pond Park!"

Partners in the creation of Mill Pond Park:
Support for this project was generously provided by the VT Housing & Conservation Board, as well as the State of Vermont's Land and Water Conservation Fund.

Additional 2005 Volunteers:

  • Jane Werly: a huge help planning and planting the Mill Pond park;
  • Tino Obrien: Stone bench hero, key person in making the beautiful stone bench in the Mill Pond park;
  • Tony Facos: diving help to clean up the river near the mill pond park;
  • Staff from the Trust for Public Lands who volunteered half a day on the Mill Pond Park.
  • VYCC crew, two weeks of crucial help cleaning up the rubble from the old house
  • Volunteers for Peace group, three weeks of vital help building the park
