Montpelier Street Lighting Committee

Purpose
This temporary committee is helping steer the City forwarding in improving the efficiency of its street and public space lighting by eliminating unnecessary streetlighting and converting remaining lighting to LEDs.

Background

Street and public space lighting typically plays an important role in any municipality's nighttime landscape. Lighting can be used to enhance public safety and security while also enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the surrounding properties. However, street lighting can be one of the highest constant electric loads and energy costs for a municipality. By eliminating unnecessary street lighting and converting older lighting technologies to LEDs,municipalities have an opportunity to reduce the cost of outdoor lighting while enhancing the nighttime environment.  In partnership with Efficiency Vermont, the City of Montpelier has created a Street Lighting Committee to address these needs.
