Tower Restoration Project: completed 10/1/09
In many places the mortar was missing, loose, or had cracks in it that allowed water to enter. This creates a situation where the integrity of a building deteriorates quickly as the freeze and thaw pushes apart the mortar quickly, loosening stones. Loose mortar was removed on both the inside and outside of the tower and replaced. Note the picture below, where, the ice is coming out from cracks. In the picture to the left, note the cracks as well as missing and loose mortar.
 |
To the left the loose mortar has been replaced.
Great effort was made to match the color and texture of the mortar. Additionally, keeping the mortar moist, after it was applied, helps to strengthen the mortar over the long run. |
