 Proposed Orchard for area near the Tower
Updated 4/16/12

  This proposal is what is being explored by a committee selected by the park commission. The committee has explored options related to preserving the view of the tower and what planting would be appropriate to replace the taller growing trees.
Additionally the committee has explored concerns raised at the previous public meeting regarding the plans.

The results of the information gathering and planning effort effort will be presented at a public meeting on Tuesday April 17th, at 7:30 in the police station conference room.

Background;
Why change what is now around the tower? Trees have been threatening to block the view from the tower.  The tower is an significant and unique feature that the commission believe is important enough change the landscaping for. The commission has already voted to remove a number of trees that were beginning to block the view of the tower. The question being considered is, what gets planted in the area around the tower, natives? fruit trees? shrubs? What kinds and where?

Below are the drawings of what is there now, original plans for elements of an orchard, and the most current plans.

In the current plans lower growing native and fruit trees and shrubs would be planted to preserve views from the tower and provide fruit for park visitors and low income residents.

Original Plan Proposed for around the tower

Latest design proposed by committee

This plan incorporates a number of thoughts raised at public meetings, including:
1. Having a more "natural" layout
2. Preserving some of the valued open areas people now enjoy there
3. Having more variety and native plants as part of the plan
4. Having some natural early succession plants, as have been enjoyed by people and wildlife
