    he Public Works Department is the largest of City departments and is responsible for providing a variety of services to the residents of Montpelier.


    The Public Works Department oversees six divisions:

    Flood Monitoring
    The Public Works Department also provides flood monitoring through it's River Watch/Ice Jam Prevention program implemented after the Flood of March 11, 1992.

    Street and Traffic
    Street Snowplow The Street Division maintains 52 miles of paved streets within the City limits. Maintenance includes street and sidewalk cleaning; bridge maintenance; snow and ice removal; traffic control; street lighting; and sanitation.

    The Street Division is also responsible for specific parking lot maintenance and cleaning throughout the City.

    Water
    The City of Montpelier distributes an average of 1 million gallons of water to Montpelier residents each day and is responsible for the water supply, water distribution system maintenance, water treatment, and water meter operations.

    Water Plant

    Sewer
    The City's Wastewater System consists of sewer collection system maintenance, treatment, and sludge disposal.

    The Montpelier Wastewater Treatment Plant treats approximately 1.1 million gallons of sewage daily.

    The Plant works in conjunction with the local Waste Management company and the Central Vermont Solid Waste Management District (CVSWMD) for sludge disposal.
    Construction
    Currently, there are several projects in pre-bid and bidding process for the upcoming spring/summer/fall construction season.

    The Department's Fleet Operations maintains the City's fleet of vehicles and equipment as well as Building Operations, which includes maintenance of the Public Works Facility.

    Ordinance Sections Pertinent to the Season
    Chapter 3, Article V, Sec. 501.
    Bounds of Public Property Given Before Construction.
    No person shall erect any fence, building or other permanent structure, or set in the ground any post, stone, marker, shrub, tree or other thing indicating possession or ownership under claim of right, nor excavate, fill or in any way alter the surface of land immediately adjoining any street or municipal land, without first having ascertained the bounds and grade of the same by application to to Public Works Director, and conformable to such bounds and grade.
    Chapter 3, Article V, Sec. 3-502.
    Permit to Dig or Obstruct a Public Way
    No person shall break or dig up the ground or pavement in a street or public place or erect thereon, or in dangerous or inconvenient proximity thereto, a staging or other device for building, or place or deposit thereon stone, earth, sand, brick, lumber or other materials, without first obtaining a written permit from the commissioner of public works and complying in all respects with the conditions of such permit. Upon the expiration of such permit, the person so permitted shall, within a reasonable time, restore and repair such street or public place to the satisfaction and acceptance of the street commissioner.
    Article V. , Sec. 3-510. Drainage.
    No person shall excavate, fill, divert, pipe, channel, or in any manner change or obstruct existing drainage or any natural water course on public lands or private property without first obtaining permission from the Public Works Director.
