With the new Master Plan, the City of Montpelier is trying to move into a new era of zoning with more flexibility and clarity for people who want to create jobs in town and build housing for families.
The future zoning regulation may incorporate some of the practices discussed in this website, but other alternatives will need to be considered to ensure that Montpelier starts the new century with zoning that matches the challenges of economic renewal, changing demographics, and resource and biodiversity conservation.
We are planning three meetings in each neighborhood. The first meeting will give an overview of the process, provide existing data about the uses and densities in your neighborhood, discuss some ideas for the types of new zoning strategies we can use. We will also hand out a survey we have developed to try and help the neighborhoods envision the types of compatible development that may be proposed.
The survey can also be found on the front page of the city website (www.montpelier-vt.org) along with information about the history of zoning and different types of zoning strategies. Below is a schedule of the first meetings in each neighborhood, as well as the schedule for meetings focused on businesses in the city.

The second meeting will provide the results of the surveys, and will outline the types of zoning that can accomplish the goals that people in the neighborhood have set with their responses to the surveys. The second round of meetings is tentatively scheduled to begin in March.

The third meeting will bring the proposed zoning language to each neighborhood group to get your reactions to it. The third set of meetings will begin in the fall of 2011. We anticipate that the entire process will take between 18 months and 2 years, but we'll be keeping you involved in every way we can.
