Arrests Made in Recent Montpelier Home Burglaries
On Saturday September 21, 2013, at approximately 8:40 PM, residents arrived home to find their house had been broken into and that many valuables had been taken. While MPD officers were busy investigating this first burglary, they received a report of a second burglary at approximately 11:32 PM, one block away on Liberty Street. Based on a successful track by MPD's K-9 team, neighbors, and intelligence from other active investigations, officers were able to initiate a series of search warrants.
During one of the search warrants executed in Montpelier shortly after 5:00 AM Sunday morning, Donald Lowe (29) of Montpelier was arrested for Burglary and Possession of Stolen Property. Several hours later, MPD executed two simultaneous search warrants on Richardson Road in Barre Town, seeking additional stolen property and a second burglary suspect. As a result of the Barre Town searches, Jonathan Welch (20) of Barre Town was arrested for Burglary, Possession of Stolen Property and he was also a wanted fugitive. Welch was on escape status from the Vermont Department of Corrections when he was allegedly involved in the recent Montpelier burglaries.
Evidence was recovered from multiple burglaries involving some of the Montpelier cases and other Central Vermont communities as well. In addition to the recovery of stolen property, a significant quantity of illegal narcotics and several handguns were also seized by MPD. MPD was assisted by the Barre City PD, Barre Town PD, and the Vermont State Police. There are multiple active investigations being conducted and MPD anticipates additional arrests related to the recent spike of burglaries and car break-ins.
Anyone with information regarding area burglaries and car break-ins is asked to contact the Montpelier Police Department at (802)223-3445.
