Works In Progress: Central Vermont Bike Path: Winooski West, Winooski East, North Branch Paths & the Cross Vermont Trail
Biking and walking are popular means of getting to and through Montpelier in the warmer months. The Central Vermont Regional Path system is proposed to extend from the Dog River Recreational Area in Montpelier through Berlin, Barre City, and Barre Town, terminating in the villages of Websterville, Graniteville, and East Barre. Citizen committees in each community along the route formed a coalition to plan the route in a coordinated fashion. Montpelier's Winooski East path and the Central Vermont Regional Path are envisioned as a key link and spur of the even more ambitious Cross Vermont Trail, which is proposed to extend from the Village of Wells River on Connecticut River to East Montpelier. The first section of the Winooski East Bike Path along Stone Cutters Way was completed in 1999, and is planned to continue from there out to Gallison Hill, and eventually connect to neighboring towns as part of the Central Vermont Bike Path and the Cross Vermont Trail. It can be accessed from either Main Street, Granite Street, or the Barre Street Recreation Center. Winooski West The first section of the Central Vermont Regional Path, known as Winooski West, runs from the Dog River Recreation Area, out near the Public Works garage and the Town Berlin, along the Winooski River to downtown Montpelier. It was divided into two stand-alone segments due to budget and other constraints at that time. Segment I, which is 1.3 miles long and runs from the Dog River Recreation Area to Taylor Street, was completed in 1999. It meanders along the banks of the Winooski River and connects to the Vermont State Employees Credit Union, Montpelier High School, Green Mountain Power, State offices and free parking at the Department of Employment and Training, and the Peace Park. Segment 2 of the Winooski West, which has not been designed or built yet, is intended to continue the path from Taylor Street, along the Winooski River, across the North Branch River and into the downtown, to connect to Winooski East, on Stone Cutters Way. A Conceptual Alignment Analysis (see below) was recently completed, which studied the range of possible ways to connect section one of the Winooski West Bike Path, which begins or ends at Taylor Street (depending on whether you're coming or going), with the Winooski East Path at Stone Cutters Way.
Winooski East The next section of the path, with Main Street as the east-west divide, is Winooski East. This, too, has been divided into two segments, the first of which, Winooski East I, was also completed in 1999. Only 0.45 miles in length, it runs from the Montpelier Recreation Center on Barre Street along Stone Cutters Way to Granite Street. Segment 2, which is currently in the design phase, will continue from Granite Street to Gallison Hill Road and the Berlin town line. North Branch Plans are also underway to extend the paths to connect to the North Branch Path, which goes from the downtown along the North Branch River to the Montpelier Recreation Field and on to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science on Upper Elm Street. The development of Montpelier's North Branch path pre-dates the concept of the Central Vermont Regional Path and is technically not a part of it, but is, nonetheless, an important pedestrian facility northward to East Montpelier. Cross Vermont Trail The Cross Vermont Trail is envisioned to extend from Burlington to Montpelier all the way to Wells River, Vermont in the Connecticut River Valley.
