Gateway Park is located at the western "gateway" to Montpelier, on Route 2. It sits on the edge of the Winooski River, right below the Interstate 89 overpass. It includes several rows of trees, some places to sit, a parking area, river access and a canoe launch. (Photo by Google Maps.)
Most of the land for Gateway Park was originally purchased by the State of Vermont, in preparation for the construction of Interstate 89. The land where the parking area is located is owned by Green Mount Cemetery. This area was a vacant lot for many years until Montpelier received a State of Vermont Transportation Enhancement Grant in 1997, enabling the construction of Gateway Park. The park was built by Green Mount Cemetery staff and a private contractor in 2000, making it one of the few publicly accessible places to launch a canoe in Montpelier.
The Green Mount Cemetery Commission maintains this area for the State of Vermont.
