From Barbara Garton : "Turkmenistan is one of the most "off the beaten path" countries for visitors and its capital, Ashgabat, is a bizarre, theme-parked cross between Las Vegas, Dubai and Disneyland. It is hard to find words to describe it and yet most Americans, even well-traveled ones, have never heard of it. Ashgabat wasn't always so cut-off. It was founded on the ruins of one of the most flourishing cities on the Silk Road. However, since Turkmenistan's independence in 1991, after the fall of the Soviet Union, the city and the country have remained isolated from the rest of the world. The country is trying to show that it is opening up, but progress is slow. Ashgabat was the culmination of a journey along the Silk Road through many unheard of cities, and some more familiar ones associated with that part of the world, but Turkmenistan and its capital were, almost literally, the icing on the cake.”
