FY23 Grant Cycle Dates
- November 30, 2021 (midnight) - Applications Due
- January, 2022- Community Fund Board Recommendations to City Council
(MCF recommendation will be public record and available for review from the City website)
- March 1, 2022 (Town Meeting) - Vote on City Budget (including community fund grants)
- August, 2022 - Grant Award payments are processed by the City after the first property tax installment due date of August 15. Awards greater than $10,000 will be paid in two installments, one after August 15 and the second after November 15.
The Montpelier Community Fund (MCF) Board was created by the City Council in 2012 to review requests and recommend allocation of municipal funds to local non-profit organizations and individual artists.
Each year, the Board solicits applications for grants from the fund. The Board takes into consideration prior funding, breadth of support, and the extent to which the grant benefits Montpelier, its residents and the public good. The MCF Board is responsible to the City for determining that grant funds are used for the purposes for which they were approved.
In addition to the City's annual allocation, organizations and citizens are encouraged to make direct contributions to the MCF in support of local non-profits and artists who contribute so greatly to the quality of life found in Montpelier.
The goals of the MCF are:
- To create a rational process by which funding requests are evaluated in the context of an overall budget, with funds allocated based on need and benefits to the community.
- To allow for the subsequent review of grants to ensure that they were spent as intended.
- To relieve voters of making funding decisions on an ad hoc basis with little information.
- To maintain the city’s commitment to funding non-profit organizations.
Under the Montpelier City Charter, anyone has the right to place funding initiatives on the ballot. However, to ensure municipal budget control and the integrity of the MCF process, grant funds are available only to those organizations and individuals who choose not to petition for funding through a ballot initiative in the same year.
